Labor Day weekend is when a lot of Pflugerville and Greater Austin homeowners finally get on a ladder, clean the gutters, or notice the upstairs still feels like August. That is a good time to look at the roof, not because something is definitely wrong, but because summer has already had its shot at it.
Hail, wind, and heat do not wait for the first cool front. By late August we are in a stretch of residential inspections, and a lot of those roofs are in the insurance conversation: photos, adjuster meetings, and pending claims. Fall storm season is next. A quiet walk around the house this weekend is cheaper than finding a leak in October.

Why this weekend matters
Summer in Central Texas is hard on a roof even when you never had a named storm.
Heat cooks shingles from above and, if the attic cannot breathe, from below. Wind lifts edges and flashing. Hail leaves bruises you cannot see from the driveway. A limb can sit in a gutter for weeks before the next downpour backs water under the drip edge.
If you wait until the first fall storm, you are checking the roof in the rain. Labor Day is still dry enough to look, and early enough to fix what summer left behind.
A ground-level checklist (no ladder required)
You can see a lot from the yard, a second-story window, or binoculars. Do not get on a steep or two-story roof to be a hero this weekend.
Look for:
- Missing, cracked, or creased shingles, especially on the windward slopes
- Granules in the gutters or at downspout splash blocks (a little is normal; piles are not)
- Lifted or separated flashing at walls, chimneys, skylights, and valleys
- Dented, cocked, or missing vents and pipe jacks
- Bent or pulled-away drip edge along the eaves and rakes
- Gutters pulling off, clogged with shingle grit, or holding water
- Soft or sagging spots along the fascia or at the eaves
- Fresh limb hits, broken branches on the roof, or debris sitting in valleys
If anything looks off, take a photo from the ground. Date it. That is useful whether you call us or just want a record.
Inside the house and the attic
A lot of “roof” problems show up indoors first.
- Water stains on ceilings or at exterior walls, even if they look old
- A musty smell in the attic
- Insulation that is packed, damp, or streaked with dust
- An upstairs that will not cool down after a still, hot afternoon
- An attic hatch that feels like a dryer door
Hot upstairs rooms in late August often start in the attic, not the thermostat. Stuck heat is hard on shingles and on the AC. Moisture is hard on decking. Neither one is a reason to panic. Both are a reason to look before fall.
After summer storms: what we actually inspect
When someone calls us after hail or wind, we inspect for any and all storm-related damage, not just the obvious bruises.
That includes the field, flashing, vents, pipe jacks, and drip edge. We take photos. We use a drone when it helps us see the whole roof. Then we sit down and walk the findings with you. If you have a claim, we walk them with your adjuster too.
That is documentation, not a promise. Carriers make their own call. A proper adjustment starts with a clear record of what is on the roof, not a guess from the street.
When to call instead of waiting
Call if you already have a stain, a missing shingle, a gutter hanging off, or a storm you never had anyone look at. Call if the upstairs has been miserable all month and you have never had the attic checked. Call if you just want a straight answer before you leave town for the long weekend.
